Lady in the Bottom of an Empty Bottle

(John McGie/Jon Lundquist)

LADY IN THE BOTTOM OF AN EMPTY BOTTLE

Lady in the bottom
Of an empty bottle
A picture on a coaster
Wet from a toast or two
My eyes are red
And yours are blue

My love is diluted
In a sinking pool of
Gin and vermouth
One hundred proof
She’s gone
She left me here
And I was wrong

Lady in the bottom
Of an empty bottle
Calling up to me
With a well-drawn smile
I lost my love
So tonight I’ll
Spend the night with you
Lady in the bottom
Of an empty bottle
Calling up to me
With the promise I will
Feel no pain
When I taste your lips
My love’s leaving
Has brought me to this
Hold me tight
So I won’t miss the
Lady
In an empty bottle

I hold the glass
It’s all I have
When she is out of reach
Words won’t keep her
When the words are lies
And the promises are weak
The bottles of potion
Of stolen devotion
Each drink it contains
Deceives me
My mistress a bottle
And tonight I’ll
Drink her deep
